Coffee Filter Suncatchers
Materials:
Coffee filters
Washable markers
Squirt/spray bottle
Paper towels
Black construction paper
Scissors
Double sided tape or glue
Activity:
Color coffee filter with markers. Make sure most of the filter is colored. Place on several paper towels (to reduce mess). Using the squirt bottle spray the coffee filter, the colors will start to spread. Let coffee filter dry. Make a frame, example a tulip. Fold a piece of black construction in half. Cut the shape of half a tulip. Then cut the same shape again leaving 1/4 inch or so of paper around the edge. When you unfold the paper you will have the outline of a tulip. Use a small piece of tape and tape the tulip frame to the coffee filter. Trim the excess filter. Hang in a sunny window.

Soap Propelled Boat and Pepper Spreading
This is an experiment that teaches about water surface tension. This will reinforces the understanding of the power of soap to wash away germs and dirt! Two liquids with different surface tensions will result in a surface tension gradient, resulting in a net force (the Marangoni effect). It is this force which allows the items to move.
Through their observations, your child will learn that soap breaks apart the surface tension of water, because when the soap is added to the items in the water, it propels them. This activity can happen inside at the sink, a bathtub or with any container that holds water. A large casserole pan is ideal.
Materials:
A tub or container, such as a large glass casserole pan, that will hold water
A towel to wipe up any spills
A thick piece of rectangular paper such as a business card, index card or piece of cardboard.
Scissors
pepper
dish soap
cotton swab or small paintbrush
Activity:
Start by having your child cut two corners of the rectangle off so one side is in a point, sort of like a motorboat shape. Fill your pan with water. Have your child paint the straight side (opposite the pointed side) of the paper motorboat with a strip of liquid dish soap. Set the paper motorboat on the water, and it will be propelled through the water as the surface tension of the water breaks apart behind it! Then make sure the pan is clean of all soap, fill it again with water, and have your child sprinkle some pepper in. Next, add one drop of dish soap to the center of the floating pepper. It will spread quickly away from the soap drop! (The soap molecule weakens the hydrogen bonds holding the water molecules together at the surface. The result is a break in the surface tension of the water.)
Extension: Have your child decorate their "motorboat" with exciting colors using colored pencil or crayons

Bake until crayons just start to melt, about five minutes. Don’t melt crayons completely, or the colors will all mix together to form one muddy color. Remove from oven and cool completely. Then use crayon cookies for coloring and other activities.
